About Us - WissenDesign.com by Fred Wissen Designs LLC
I retired from the Navy in December of 2013 and am now working as a program manager. I first got into wood turning a in 2009 when I attended a pen making class at the Norfolk Woodcraft. Since then, my wood turning hobby has expanded into learning other aspects of pen making such as segmentation, stabilizing, casting my own acrylics, and creating my own line of custom pen blanks out of unique materials such as cartridge casings and various casting materials.
Tapping into my engineering background, I love to design and improve useful tools and jigs for all my crafting projects. My line of silicone casting molds first started by looking into how I could create my own acrylic blanks, but it has grown into a thriving online business since 2012. I am always looking for better ways to get things done. Planning and process are as important as the final product.
My career history is a bit more colorful with all the moving around we did as a Navy family. I have worked in retail, as a teacher, and freelance graphic designer, learning many service skills prior to getting a degree in business administration. I assist our business with vectoring images for CNC and Laser engraving projects and handling many office duties. I also spend time tutoring at a local college.
My specialty is in creating unique pen blank designs. I like to dabble in various arts and crafts, including polymer clay, painting, metal foil, and multi-media combinations. I am always trying new materials, and rarely go shopping without finding something new to try turning into a pen blank. The silliest question Fred asks is "What are you making?" since most days I don't know until it's done. Some of my greatest work comes from what others may originally call a mistake, but I like to challenge the norm and prefer not to mass produce any art form, which keeps life interesting!
